AI search
what are Google AI Overviews and what do they mean for your business?
AI Overviews are Google's own written answers at the top of many results pages, assembled from pages Google trusts and linked back to their sources. For your business, they change the goal from ranking somewhere on the page to being the source the answer cites.
what an AI Overview actually is
Ask Google a question and, for many queries, a written summary now appears above the classic results, with links to the pages it drew from. It is generated from the same index your rankings run on. That is good news: the fundamentals that got you ranked are the same fundamentals that get you cited.
what changes for your traffic
Honestly: on purely informational queries, some people get their answer on the results page and never click. That traffic was always the shallowest. What matters for a business is twofold. Cited sources gain a new kind of visibility inside the answer itself, and buying-intent searches still click through, because nobody hires an agency or buys software from a summary. The productive response is to become the source, not to resent the format.
how to get cited
The same craft as everywhere in AI search. One question per page. The complete answer in the opening sentences. Plain language that can be lifted whole. Structured data where it genuinely fits, FAQ and article markup especially. And unbroken technical SEO underneath, since citation starts with indexation.
the honest catch
AI Overviews don't appear for every query, their behaviour changes as Google iterates, and nobody outside Google fully knows the trigger rules. Anyone selling guaranteed placement inside them is selling certainty they don't have. What's durable is the underlying craft: pages that answer questions cleanly get used by whatever format Google ships next.
Common questions
Do AI Overviews take my traffic?
- On informational queries, some clicks are answered on the page. Cited sources keep their visibility, and commercial queries still drive clicks. The net effect depends on being the source rather than the bystander.
Can I block Google from using my content in AI features?
- You can block Google-Extended, but for a business trying to be found, removing yourself from the answers usually costs more than it protects.
Do I need separate content for AI Overviews and ChatGPT?
- No. The same answer-first pages serve both, which is the efficient thing about doing this properly once.
