Working with an agency
how to choose a search marketing agency
Choose the agency that shows you its thinking before you pay, insists you own your own accounts, and talks about tests rather than promises. Everything else, the deck, the office, the client logos, is decoration around those three signals.
green flags worth trusting
A real plan sketched before any contract, specific to your business rather than a template. Plain-English answers about what they would do in month one. Pricing they can justify. References you can actually call. And curiosity about your numbers, because an agency that does not ask what a customer is worth to you cannot possibly optimise toward it.
red flags that end conversations
Guaranteed rankings or guaranteed AI recommendations, which nobody can honestly promise. Accounts held in the agency's name, which is your data held hostage. Reports full of impressions and jargon but empty of changes made. Long lock-ins justified by nothing. Any of these alone is a warning; two together is an answer.
the questions that reveal everything
Who owns the accounts and what happens to them if we leave. Who exactly does the work each week. What did you change in a client account last month and why. How will we both know if this is not working. Watch for comfort with that last question, because good agencies have an answer and bad ones have a subject change.
the honest catch
You are reading this on an agency's site, so weigh our incentive. What we would say either way: fit matters as much as competence, small accounts are sometimes better served in-house, and the cheapest quote is usually the most expensive thing you can buy in this market. Slow the decision down; the good agencies will not mind.
Common questions
Should I pick a specialist or a generalist?
- For search, a team that lives in it daily. The craft moves quickly now, especially with AI search, and depth beats breadth.
How long should I commit for?
- Long enough for the work to show, short enough to keep everyone honest. Quarterly reviews with a clean exit path align incentives better than long lock-ins.
What should I prepare before talking to agencies?
- Your rough customer value, your current numbers, and the outcome you actually want. Agencies quote better against clarity, and you will judge the answers faster.
