how to show up in AI search: a plain-English guide for businesses
To show up in AI search you need three things. Pages that answer your buyers' real questions directly, in plain language. A website AI systems can easily read and quote. And consistent mentions of your business across the web that back up what you say about yourself. Everything below is the why and the how.
what changed
Buyers aren't just searching Google anymore, they're asking AI. Someone who would have typed "accounting software small business" now asks ChatGPT "what accounting software should a small UK business use?" and gets a short list of named companies. Google is part of this shift too, since AI Overviews now answer many questions right on the results page.
Search hasn't stopped working. A second way of finding businesses has grown up alongside it. Your buyers now get a ranked list of links and a written answer that names a handful of companies. You want to be in both.
how AI decides who to recommend
There's no secret index of AI-approved businesses. When an assistant answers a buying question it draws on two sources: what it learned in training, which is roughly the web's accumulated description of you, and what it retrieves live by running searches behind the scenes and reading the results. Both reward the same thing. Clear, direct answers that other sources back up.
That has a practical consequence. When an assistant reads a page to build its answer, it lifts the passage that most cleanly answers the question. A page that opens with "X costs between A and B, depending on Y" gets quoted. A page that opens with three paragraphs of scene-setting doesn't.
what to do, in order
Answer real questions. List the questions buyers ask before choosing you: cost, timelines, comparisons, whether it's worth it, whether they need it yet. Give each one its own page and put the complete answer in the first two sentences. Honest answers get cited more, including the unflattering ones, because almost nobody else gives them.
Write like you talk. Assistants answer in plain language, so they quote plain language. Jargon is hard to lift.
Keep your classic SEO in place. Live retrieval runs on search indexes. If search engines can't see you, neither can the assistants that use them. Good technical SEO is the foundation AI search sits on, which is why none of this replaces your existing work.
Back yourself up. Assistants weight consistency. Your site, your directories, your reviews and your press should describe the same business in the same terms. Real reviews and genuine third-party mentions matter more now than they ever did for rankings alone.
Then measure. Ask ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity the questions your buyers would ask, monthly, and note who gets named. That becomes your new rank tracker.
the honest catch
Not every business needs to act on this today. If your customers find you by postcode search, a local emergency plumber say, classic search still carries almost all the load and you should get that right first. Be wary of anyone selling certainty here as well. This field is young and some of what's written about ranking in AI is guesswork. We'd rather tell you what's known, what's inferred and what's still being tested. AI search rewards early movers but nobody gets punished for starting with the fundamentals.
Common questions
Is AI search optimization different from SEO?
- It's an extension. SEO gets you into the index. AI search optimization makes your content the passage an assistant quotes from that index. You need both and the second builds on the first.
Do I need to stop investing in Google?
- No, quite the opposite. Google is where most buying journeys still touch, AI Overviews are part of Google, and paid search still converts. AI search is a new layer on the same foundation.
How long until it works?
- A well-structured page can start appearing in retrieval-based answers within weeks of being indexed. Becoming part of what models know from training takes longer and compounds with consistent mentions. Treat it like SEO: months rather than days, with early signals sooner.
How do I know if buyers in my market are asking AI?
- Ask your last ten customers how they found and shortlisted you. If AI tools come up even once or twice, the shift has reached your market.
