What does "Misconfigured" mean in Google Ads, and how do you fix it?

By Tom Claydon, Co-founder, Nudge · Updated 21 Oct 2026

"Misconfigured" is a status Google Ads gives a conversion action when, in Google's words, "conversions have stopped recording entirely due to a setup error or a broken tag." Fix it in Tag Assistant: find why the tag stopped firing, repair it, then check the action is primary and sits in a goal your campaigns use. Until then, Smart Bidding is learning from missing data.

Where do you see the status?

In Google Ads, go to Goals, then Summary, then the conversions table. The status column shows one of five states.

StatusWhat Google says it means
Active"everything is working as intended."
Needs attentionThere are things to fix, but it hasn't stopped recording.
Misconfigured"Conversions have stopped recording entirely due to a setup error or a broken tag."
Awaiting conversions"No conversions have been recorded in the last 7 days."
RemovedDeleted or archived, no longer tracking.

Hover over the status to see Google's note on the cause. Google says some statuses are still rolling out, so you may not see all five yet.

Why does "Misconfigured" matter so much?

Because bidding runs on conversions. When a primary action stops recording, campaigns that bid on it lose their signal. Spend can carry on while reported results drop, and automated bidding adjusts to data that is no longer true.

It is the first thing to check in any audit. See our Google Ads audit checklist.

How do you fix a misconfigured conversion action?

  1. Open the action. Goals, then Summary, then click the conversion action. Read the status note.
  2. Run Tag Assistant on the page where the conversion happens (the thank-you page, or the form). Confirm the Google tag and the conversion event fire.
  3. Look for what changed. A new website, a form plugin update, a consent banner, or a tag manager edit can all cause this. Check the date the conversions stopped against the website's changes.
  4. Repair and test. Fix the tag or trigger, complete a test conversion, and check it in Tag Assistant.
  5. Check it is primary. Primary actions drive bidding; secondary ones only do inside a custom goal.
  6. Check the goal is used. An action drives bidding only when it is primary and the campaign uses the goal that contains it.
  7. Wait for the status to change. It moves once conversions record again. Then watch results for one to two conversion cycles before changing bids.

What is the goal problem Google doesn't label?

A campaign can bid to a conversion goal with no primary action in it. Nothing is broken, so no status says "Misconfigured". But Google's rule for standard goals is plain: an action only drives bidding if it is set as primary and the campaign uses the goal that contains it. A goal with no primary action gives the campaign's bidding nothing real to aim at.

How it happens:

  • Someone sets the only action in a goal to secondary to "tidy up" reporting.
  • A new campaign picks up account-default goals that don't contain the action that matters.
  • A campaign-specific goal is set up, then its action is removed.

How to find it: for each campaign, list the goals it bids to, then check each goal contains at least one primary action. In a large account or across many client accounts, this is slow by hand.

Ask Claude, once Google Ads is connected: "Which campaigns bid to a goal with no primary conversion action?"

How do you stop it happening again?

  1. Check conversion statuses every week, and after any website change.
  2. Keep one person responsible for tags, and log every change to them.
  3. Before you mark an action secondary, check which campaigns' goals it sits in.
  4. Compare Google's conversions with real sales each month. A gap that grows is an early warning.

Where does Nudge fit?

When you ask in Claude, Nudge checks a connected account for broken conversion tracking and for campaigns bidding to goals with no primary action, and ranks them first because every later fix depends on them. You approve any change, and it can be undone in one step.

Watch out for: Nudge cannot repair a tag on your website. It finds the problem and tells you where to look. Nudge covers Google Ads only and works inside Claude only.

Questions

What does Misconfigured mean in Google Ads?

A conversion action has stopped recording entirely because of a setup error or a broken tag.

What is the difference between Misconfigured and Needs attention?

Needs attention means there are issues to fix but conversions are still recording. Misconfigured means they have stopped.

Does a misconfigured conversion affect Smart Bidding?

Yes, if it is a primary action in a goal the campaign uses. Bidding learns from conversions, so missing ones mislead it.

Why does my conversion action say Awaiting conversions?

Google says no conversions were recorded in the last 7 days. It is common for a new action, paused campaigns, or low traffic.

Do secondary conversions affect bidding?

No. Google says secondary actions are for observation only, except when they are included in a custom goal.
