what the click data actually shows when AI answers appear
The click decline is not a rumour, it is measured, and pretending otherwise would be selling comfort. Pew Research Center tracked the real browsing of 900 US adults and found that when a Google results page included an AI summary, users clicked a traditional result 8 percent of the time, against 15 percent without one. Ahrefs, analysing hundreds of millions of searches, initially measured top-ranking pages losing about a third of their clickthrough under AI Overviews and later reported the gap widening substantially. The question is not whether this is happening. It is what a sensible business does about it.
read the data precisely
Three findings matter most. Clicks on classic results roughly halve when a summary appears. Clicks on the sources cited inside summaries are rare, around 1 percent in Pew's data. And users more often end their session entirely after seeing a summary, 26 percent versus 16 percent, because the question got answered. The traffic that disappears is mostly the shallow kind: quick factual lookups that never bought anything anyway.
the traffic that remains is worth more
Nobody completes a considered purchase inside a summary. The searches that still produce clicks skew toward comparison, evaluation and action, exactly the intent a business wants, and a visitor who arrives after reading an AI answer arrives pre-briefed. Volume is falling faster than value. Plans built on raw traffic counts will read this era wrongly; plans built on customers acquired will read it correctly.
what to do, concretely
Two moves, made together. Become a source the answers cite, which the KDD 2024 GEO research shows is materially influenced by quotations, statistics, sourcing and clarity. And concentrate your effort on high-intent pages where clicks still happen: pricing, comparisons, who-is-this-for. Watch branded search and direct approaches too, because being named in answers shows up there before it shows up anywhere else.
the honest catch
These studies measure different slices with different methods, and the exact percentages will keep moving as the platforms iterate. What no serious dataset shows is the trend reversing. Plan for a web where answers absorb the shallow clicks, and where the visible winners are the businesses the answers quote.
Common questions
Is SEO dead then?
- The lazy version is. The work that earns citations and converts high-intent visitors is more valuable than before, precisely because casual traffic is thinning.
Should I block AI crawlers to protect content?
- For a business seeking customers, blocking usually trades a real visibility channel for a theoretical protection. You cannot be recommended by systems that cannot read you.
What should replace traffic as the headline metric?
- Customers acquired, cost per customer, branded search volume, and presence in AI answers for your key buying questions, checked on a schedule.
