Google Ads
why isn't my Google Ads account converting?
Nine times out of ten the answer sits in one of four places: the search terms you are actually paying for, the match between what the ad promises and what the page delivers, the landing page itself, or tracking that miscounts reality. Work through them in that order and you'll usually find the leak before you touch the budget.
first, look at what you're actually paying for
Open the search terms report and read the real queries triggering your ads. Almost every underperforming account is quietly buying clicks from searches that were never going to convert: wrong intent, wrong location, job seekers, students, competitors. Tightening match types and building the negative keyword list is unglamorous work, and it is regularly worth more than any clever tactic.
second, check the promise chain
The ad makes a promise and the landing page must keep it, in the visitor's own words, immediately. If the ad says one thing and the page opens with something else, people leave before reading. Message match sounds trivial. It decides conversion rates.
third, judge the landing page honestly
One message, one action, proof nearby, and the answer to "is this for me?" visible without scrolling. If your destination is a generic homepage with six menu options, the account isn't broken, the destination is.
fourth, verify the tracking
Some "underperforming" accounts are converting fine and counting wrong: duplicate tags, missing thank-you events, phone calls nobody records. Before any big decision, confirm that a test conversion actually registers. It takes an hour and regularly changes the whole story.
the honest catch
Sometimes none of the four is the problem. If the offer itself is out of step with the market, no account tweak rescues it, and low volume can mean there isn't enough data to judge anything yet. An honest reviewer will say either of those things plainly rather than sell you a restructure.
Common questions
How long should I wait before judging performance?
- Judge in weeks and months, not days, and judge on enough clicks to mean something. Early days are noisy by nature.
Should I just switch to a different bidding strategy?
- Not first. Bidding optimises toward what your tracking reports, so fix the inputs before changing the brain.
Do I need to rebuild the account from scratch?
- Rarely. Rebuilds throw away learning. Most accounts need pruning and message match, not demolition.
