Why are my Google Ads conversions not tracking?

By Tom Claydon, Co-founder, Nudge · Updated 22 Oct 2026

Google Ads conversions usually stop showing for one of nine reasons: the tag broke, the action is set to secondary, the status is still waiting, conversions are reported against the click date and arrive late, consent is denied, auto-tagging is off, a tag manager trigger changed, the counting or window setting changed, or the drop is real. Check them in that order. Start in Goals, then Summary.

Where do you start?

Open Goals, then Summary, and look at the status of each conversion action. Google uses five statuses:

StatusWhat Google says
Active"everything is working as intended"
Needs attentionIssues to fix, but conversions "haven't stopped recording" entirely
Misconfigured"Conversions have stopped recording entirely due to a setup error or a broken tag"
Awaiting conversions"No conversions have been recorded in the last 7 days"
RemovedDeleted or archived

Google says some status details are still rolling out, so your account may show older labels such as "No recent conversions".

The 9 causes, in the order to check them

1. Is the tag broken?

A "Misconfigured" status means conversions have stopped. Run Tag Assistant from the action's status (Troubleshoot), enter your landing page or home page (Google advises against starting on the conversion page), then go through to a test conversion. Google says "The Google tag should be installed on every page of your website", and that verified actions appear after approximately 30 minutes. Status can take up to 48 hours to update.

Things that can break it: a new website, a form plugin update, a new cookie banner, or a tag manager change.

2. Is the action set to secondary?

Primary actions are "reported in the 'Conversions' column in your reports and used for bidding". Secondary actions "are for observation only" and show in "All conversions" instead. If someone switched an action to secondary, its conversions vanish from the main column. Google also makes conversions created from Google Analytics secondary by default.

3. Is it just waiting?

"Awaiting conversions" can mean the action was created under 48 hours ago, campaigns are paused, or traffic is too low to trigger a conversion. Nothing may be broken.

4. Are conversions arriving late?

Standard conversion columns report against the date of the ad click or interaction, not the day the conversion happened. Google says "conversions can be reported up to 90 days after the click", so the last few days always look weaker than they will end up. Check the lag with Conversions, then Days to conversion, using a date range that "ends at least 30 days ago".

If you use consent mode in basic mode, Google tags do not load until the visitor accepts the banner, so unconsented conversions are not observed. Modelled conversions only start once the account meets Google's threshold of "700 ad clicks over a 7 day period, per country and domain grouping". A new consent banner can cause a sudden drop.

6. Is auto-tagging on?

Auto-tagging adds the click identifier (GCLID) that many setups need. Google says "Auto-tagging is now on by default for new accounts", but it can be switched off, and "Some browsers require auto-tagging to track conversions."

7. Did a Google Tag Manager change break it?

If you use Tag Manager, check the conversion tag still fires on the right trigger, and that the Conversion Linker tag is active.

8. Did a setting change?

Check the counting setting (one or every conversion) and the conversion window (30 days by default). Google says changes to counting "will only apply to future conversion reporting", so a change can make periods look different.

9. Is the drop real?

If tracking checks out, compare Google's conversions with real sales or leads from the CRM for the same period. If both fell, the problem is demand, the offer or the landing page, not the tracking.

Why does this matter for bidding?

Smart Bidding learns from primary conversions. When they stop or arrive late, bidding optimises to data that is no longer true, and spend can carry on while reported results drop. Fix tracking before changing any bids. See the Google Ads audit checklist.

How do you check all of this quickly?

With Google Ads connected to Claude, ask: "List every conversion action with its status, primary or secondary, counting and window, and show which stopped recording in the last 14 days." See 40 Claude prompts for Google Ads.

Nudge checks conversion tracking first on any connected account when you ask in Claude, including campaigns bidding to goals with no primary action. Nudge cannot repair a tag on your website.

Questions

How long do Google Ads conversions take to show?

Google says the status can take up to 48 hours to update after a tag fix, and conversions can be reported up to 90 days after the click.

Why do conversions show in All conversions but not Conversions?

The action is set to secondary. Only primary actions appear in the Conversions column and drive bidding.

Why did conversions drop after I added a cookie banner?

With consent mode in basic mode, Google tags wait for consent, so conversions from visitors who decline are not recorded.

What does Awaiting conversions mean?

Google says no conversions were recorded in the last 7 days. It is common for new actions, paused campaigns or low traffic.
