Working with an agency
why you should own your own ad accounts
If leaving your agency means losing your ad account, you lose the history, the data and the optimisation your money paid for, and you start again from zero with the next partner. Account ownership is the single most consequential clause in any agency agreement, and it costs nothing to get right on day one.
what account history is actually worth
An established ad account is not a container, it is accumulated learning. Years of search terms, conversion data and test results are what the platform's bidding systems learn from, and what any competent marketer builds on. Walk away without it and the next person pays to relearn what you already bought.
how lock-in happens
Rarely by malice, usually by default: the agency opens the account under its own manager profile because it is quicker, and nobody thinks about it until the relationship ends. Some firms do use it deliberately as retention. Either way the remedy is identical and must happen at the start, because untangling it at the end is when you have the least leverage.
what good looks like
The account sits in your business's name, billed to your card, with the agency granted access to work inside it. They bring the expertise, you keep the asset, and either side can end the arrangement without hostages. This is how we work at Nudge, not as a favour but because it is the only honest structure, and any agency confident in its work should agree without flinching.
the honest catch
Ownership protects your downside, it does not guarantee your upside. A well-owned account can still be badly run. Treat ownership as the entry requirement and judge the work separately, month by month, in numbers you understand.
Common questions
The agency says their account gets better rates. True?
- Ad platforms auction clicks; there is no wholesale discount for agency-held accounts. Whatever efficiency they bring travels with their skill, not the account's owner field.
We are already locked in. What now?
- Ask for a transfer or for ownership to be moved to you; platforms support it. Expect some friction, do it anyway, and do it before you need it.
Does this apply beyond Google Ads?
- Yes: Meta, LinkedIn, analytics, tag manager, the lot. Same principle everywhere, your name on the door, their hands on the tools.
