Can you use ChatGPT for Google Ads?

By Tom Claydon, Co-founder, Nudge · Updated 4 Nov 2026

Yes, in two ways. You can export a report from Google Ads and upload the file to ChatGPT, which works on free and paid plans. Or you can connect ChatGPT to your live account through an MCP server, such as the open source one Google publishes. Google's setup guide names ChatGPT as a client it can connect to. OpenAI says full custom MCP support is for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu on the web, and Pro users can connect with read and fetch permissions only. We could not find an official Google Ads app in ChatGPT from Google or OpenAI (checked 4 November 2026).

Is there an official Google Ads plugin for ChatGPT?

Not one we could find. What Google does publish is an open source Google Ads MCP server. Google says it "provides a standardized bridge to the Google Ads API, which lets AI agents analyze and retrieve campaign data using natural language." For ChatGPT and Claude, Google's guide says to "add a custom connector pointing to your Cloud Run URL with the /mcp path".

So the official route is a server you host yourself (Google also mentions a hosted pilot for allowlisted participants) and add to ChatGPT as a custom MCP server.

How do you connect ChatGPT to Google Ads?

  1. Check your ChatGPT plan. OpenAI says custom MCP servers are "available for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu customers on ChatGPT web". On Business, "Only admins and owners can create and publish plugins for custom MCP servers". Pro users get read and fetch only. It is web only, not mobile.
  2. Get Google Ads API access on a Google Cloud project. Google says the project needs "Explorer access, Basic access, or Standard access". Developer tokens "were sunset on September 9, 2026", so the latest version of the server no longer needs one. Explorer access allows "up to 2,880 operations per day against production accounts".
  3. Set up OAuth. Create an OAuth client in the same Google Cloud project, add the Google Ads scope (https://www.googleapis.com/auth/adwords), and add ChatGPT's callback address (https://chatgpt.com/connector_platform_oauth_redirect) as an authorised redirect URI. If your OAuth consent screen is in Testing, add your Google account as a test user.
  4. Host the server. Google's guide shows how to deploy it to Google Cloud Run. Google warns: "Never omit GOOGLE_ADS_MCP_OAUTH_CLIENT_ID and GOOGLE_ADS_MCP_OAUTH_CLIENT_SECRET when deploying with --allow-unauthenticated." Without them, the server cannot enforce sign-in.
  5. Add it in ChatGPT. Go to Plugins, select the plus button, then "Add custom MCP server". Enter the server URL ending in /mcp, choose OAuth, tick the risk warning, then "Create as a plugin".
  6. Test it. Install the plugin, start a new conversation, type @ and pick it. One of Google's sample prompts is "What customers do I have access to?"

What can ChatGPT do once it is connected?

Mostly read. Google's guide lists three tools: one lists the accounts you can access, one runs Google Ads Query Language (GAQL) searches for metrics, budgets and status, and one describes the fields each report has. Google's guide says: "This implementation is strictly read-only. It cannot modify bids, pause campaigns, or create new assets."

The project's GitHub page, read the same day, lists a few more tools for assets and labels, behind what it calls a "Propose & Confirm" step. Check which version you deploy. Its default settings turn these on. For read-only, set labels: false and assets: false in tools_config.yaml.

What are the risks?

  • Your data goes to the model. Google's README says: "The MCP Server will expose your data to the Agent or LLM that you connect to it."
  • OpenAI does not check the server. OpenAI says "custom MCP servers are not developed or verified by OpenAI".
  • Prompt injection. OpenAI warns: "If the model obeys the injected instructions it may take actions the user and developer never intended".
  • Write actions. ChatGPT "supports both read and write tools" and "Write actions by default require confirmation." OpenAI also says tools without a read-only label "are treated as write actions".

Which prompts work?

With an uploaded search terms report, for example:

  • "List search terms with spend and no conversions, highest spend first."
  • "Group these search terms by theme and show cost and conversions for each group."
  • "Which search terms look unrelated to what we sell?"

An upload is a snapshot, not your live account. OpenAI says its data analysis environment "cannot make external web requests or API calls". For a longer list, see Claude prompts for Google Ads; you can try the same prompts in ChatGPT.

Claude vs ChatGPT for Google Ads?

  • Same server. Google's guide names both, so both can use the same server.
  • Plans. ChatGPT: full custom MCP support on Business and Enterprise/Edu; Pro is read and fetch only. Claude: custom connectors on "Free, Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, and Enterprise plans". "Free users are limited to one custom connector."
  • Where you add it. ChatGPT: Plugins, then "Add custom MCP server". Claude: "Customize > Connectors" (Pro and Max; on Team and Enterprise an owner adds it).
  • Team setup. On ChatGPT Business, admins and owners add the server. On Claude Team, "only Owners and Primary Owners" can add it, and then each person connects.

How do we decide?

Our approach:

  1. One question about one report: upload the export. No setup.
  2. Regular checks across many accounts: a live connection, read-only first.
  3. Changes: a person approves every one. Prefer tools that propose a change and wait.
  4. Pick the assistant your team already pays for. We build on Claude, so our guides show how to connect Google Ads to Claude.

Nudge reads campaigns, search terms and conversion actions on any connected account when you ask in Claude, and changes only what you approve.

Questions

Can ChatGPT connect to Google Ads?

Yes, through an MCP server such as Google's open source Google Ads MCP server, added in ChatGPT as a custom MCP server. Or upload an exported report instead.

Is there a Google Ads plugin for ChatGPT?

We could not find an official one from Google or OpenAI on 4 November 2026. Google's own route is its MCP server, which you host and add yourself.

Can ChatGPT change my Google Ads campaigns?

Not bids, budgets or campaign status through Google's MCP server: its developer guide says it "cannot modify bids, pause campaigns, or create new assets". Its GitHub page lists a few asset and label tools behind a confirm step. ChatGPT can run write tools from other servers, and OpenAI says write actions "by default require confirmation".

Do I need a Google Ads developer token?

No. Google sunset developer tokens on 9 September 2026. API access now sits with your Google Cloud project.

Which ChatGPT plans can add a custom MCP server?

OpenAI names Business and Enterprise/Edu for full support, and Pro for read and fetch only. It is web only.

Does Google Ads have its own AI assistant?

Yes. Ask Advisor is in beta inside Google Ads. Google calls it "an agentic conversational experience built within Gemini capabilities". It is not available in manager (MCC) accounts.
